How Toxic Relationships Drain Your Business Energy

Have you ever wondered why your business isn’t growing as fast as you want it to? The secret problem might not be your marketing strategy or your pricing. It could be the energy-draining relationships in your life.

In a recent No BS Wealth podcast episode, host Stoy Hall had an eye-opening conversation with energy healer and former CPA Danielle Ingenito. They explored how toxic relationships impact entrepreneurs and revealed surprising truths about business success.

The Hidden Cost of Toxic Relationships for Entrepreneurs

When you’re running a business, every ounce of energy matters. Yet many entrepreneurs don’t realize how much their personal relationships affect their business performance.

As Danielle shares from her own experience:

“I used to fight all the time because I was home all day with my daughter first, and then I was working at the same time… there was a power struggle. I mean, there’s a reason we’re divorced.”

This kind of relationship tension doesn’t stay at home. It follows you into your work and drains the creativity and focus you need to succeed.

The Entrepreneur’s Energy Crisis

Running a business takes tremendous mental energy. Unlike jobs with set hours, entrepreneurship demands constant attention. As Stoy points out:

“There’s some days like, yeah, I really want to just focus on content and get a newsletter and pushing stuff out, but I’ve got four or five projects from my clients that need to be done… that is so draining and really difficult to overcome.”

When you add relationship stress on top of this workload, burnout becomes almost inevitable.

What Is Entrepreneurial Burnout?

Many business owners experience burnout without recognizing it. Danielle explains burnout this way:

“Burnout to me would be like, you’re just doing way too much and you kind of lose this… passion. I don’t wanna do anything. It could be emotionally a mess. Really. Like emotions are just all over the place, feeling like you can’t get to where you wanna be because you’re just so tired.”

If this sounds familiar, you might be experiencing burnout right now. The good news is that you can overcome it.

The Overachiever Trap: Why You Never Feel Successful

One of the most surprising insights from the conversation was about the “overachiever” persona. As Danielle explains:

“There’s a persona called the overachiever. And an overachiever is actually a trauma response because when we’re overachieving, we’re just trying to hit that next validation for ourselves.”

This explains why so many successful entrepreneurs still feel unsatisfied. They achieve one goal only to immediately focus on the next without celebrating their wins.

“We get a sale, right? Oh, we want another sale. Right? But that little, that sale is only like a little bit like, ‘oh, okay. Now what?’ Right. And then we go to the next thing and we go to the next thing.”

How Money Trauma Affects Your Business Decisions

Both Stoy and Danielle discussed how childhood experiences with money shaped their relationship with finances later in life. Danielle shared:

“I hated money because growing up my mother got divorced from my father and then married my stepfather and all they did was fight about money. So I grew up hating money, which was not a good thing, which is why I was broke and in debt a lot.”

This kind of money trauma often leads entrepreneurs to make poor financial decisions in their businesses – either overspending or being too afraid to invest in growth.

3 Practical Steps to Heal Your Energy and Grow Your Business

1. Create Clear Boundaries

The first step to protecting your energy is setting boundaries. As Danielle advises:

“I think it’s a balance between learning boundaries for yourself, because like you said, there’s always something to do. So you have to set those boundaries so that you know that you have yourself your time.”

For entrepreneurs, this might mean setting specific work hours, turning off notifications after a certain time, or having dedicated family time where business isn’t discussed.

2. Shift Your Identity

One of the most powerful ways to create change is to shift how you see yourself:

“This is the one thing that changed my whole life into having more money than I’ve ever had in the bank, is shifting my identity. And when people resonate or identify with being broke, they’re going to continue to be broke.”

Try saying to yourself daily: “I am a financially responsible person” or “I am a successful business owner.” Your actions will start to align with this new identity.

3. Practice Self-Awareness

Before you can change anything, you need to become aware of your patterns:

“The one thing I always say is number one is awareness. We have to be aware of what we’re doing before we can change anything.”

Pay attention to how you feel when making business decisions. Are you acting from a place of fear or confidence? Are you trying to prove something to someone else?

Take Action Today

If you’re ready to transform your energy and your business, start by examining the relationships in your life. Which ones give you energy, and which ones drain you? Then use Danielle’s techniques to release negative energy and build healthier patterns.
