Joshua Barbin speaks with Stoy Hall about de-risking a portfolio through alternative investments. Stoy shares his views on how the industry has deemed alternatives as super risky when in reality, there are a ton of alternatives that are less risky than the stock market. Stoy explains that his firm is heavy in real estate and preferred debt, and there are a handful of banking instruments in the private sector that are fully collateralized by someone else’s, like by the bank, making them less risky. However, Stoy argues that the current system is tied to a dollar amount, which should not be the case. They also discuss prudence, which is the standard that all investors operate under, and the difficulties of getting disclosure and choosing when opening up the accredited investor role to everybody. Finally, Joshua mentions that many companies are staying private longer, and they end the podcast with their thoughts on the limitations of regulations in the alternative investment space.
